The Principal and Chief Executive of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Engr. Dr. Samuel E. Onoji, has called on the newly inaugurated Student Union Government (SUG) executives to prioritize accountability and dialogue as essential elements of effective leadership.
Represented by the Director of Research and Development, Dr. (Mrs.) Tina Isichei, during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2024/2025 SUG and SRC executives at the Institute's Council Chamber, Dr. Onoji emphasized the importance of fostering peace and harmony within the institution.
“It is a privilege to be elected as student representatives, and you must make it count,” Dr. Isichei stated. “Issues with management should be resolved through dialogue rather than insults or protests. Accountability is critical in leadership. Every fund spent on projects or other initiatives must be properly accounted for. If you cannot manage the responsibilities entrusted to you now, it raises doubts about your ability to lead in the future.”
Dr. Isichei further urged the student leaders to strictly adhere to the institute's policies, including its zero-tolerance stance on cultism, examination malpractice, prostitution, and other social vices. She encouraged the executives to promote these values among the student community, thereby creating a conducive learning environment.
The Principal’s representative also addressed the issue of frequent examination postponements, cautioning that such delays negatively impact final-year students, who may miss opportunities to graduate, participate in national service, and compete in the labor market alongside their peers.
“I urge this administration to ensure that classes commence as scheduled and to put an end to unnecessary examination postponements. Leadership is about serving others diligently, not about using authority to intimidate or bully,” she advised.
In his response, the newly elected SUG President, Comrade Temisan Collins Oghenevwede, assured the PTI management of his commitment to maintaining a peaceful and protest-free environment during his tenure.
