A renowned Professor of Parasitology at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Olusegun Matthew Akanbi, is set to deliver the university's 33rd Inaugural Lecture.
In a statement by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, the lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the University Multipurpose Hall.
Guests are expected to be seated by 1:30 PM, and the event will be chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige.
Titled “Small but Mighty to Pull down the Mightier: The Menace of Malaria Parasite”, the lecture will shed light on the impact of malaria parasites.
Prof. Akanbi earned his B.Sc. in Zoology (Parasitology) from the University of Calabar in 1994, followed by an M.Sc. in Cellular Parasitology in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Parasitology in 2007, both from the University of Ibadan.
His academic training includes international certifications, such as one from Harvard School of Public Health on Ethical Issues in International Health Research (2007) and another in Novel Vaccination Strategies from Scuola Superiore D’Immunologia, Italy (2013).
Joining AAUA in 2004 as an Assistant Lecturer, Prof. Akanbi rose to become a full Professor in 2018.
Over the years, he has held over 20 leadership positions, including Acting Head of Department, Acting Director, and Sub-Dean. He currently serves as the Dean of Student Affairs and University Chaplain.
A highly sought-after speaker, Prof. Akanbi has participated in numerous national and international conferences.
He is affiliated with various professional organizations, including the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria and the British Society for Parasitology.
With 32 published research papers in respected national and international journals, Prof. Akanbi has earned accolades such as the 2024 Best Dean of the Year Award.
Additionally, he has secured multiple grants and scholarships, including the IOCD Travel Fellowship (EU), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Travel Fellowship (UK), Harvard School of Public Health Scholarship (USA), and the TETFund National Research Fund Grant.
