Barcelona have received €4.08 million from FIFA for the participation of their players in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This is the joint highest amount paid to any club, along with Manchester City.
FIFA pays clubs a daily compensation for the release of their players to the World Cup. The rate is $10,000 per player per day, and the payments are made to all clubs that a player has played for in the two years prior to the tournament. These have been described as special case scenarios.
Barcelona had 17 players at the World Cup, including Lionel Messi, who reached the final with Argentina. The club also had six former players at the tournament, including Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Lionel Messi, for one, was a part of the Barcelona squad during the 2020/21 campaign. As such, the club will receive a total of around €3,256 for each day he spent in Qatar. The Blaugrana will receive €146,520 for Antoine Griezmann, who officially left the club in the summer.
In total, FIFA paid out €187.9 million to clubs for World Cup participation. The top five clubs by payment were:
- Barcelona (€4.08 million)
- Manchester City (€4.08 million)
- Bayern Munich (€4.3 million)
- Paris Saint-Germain (€4.2 million)
- Real Madrid (€3.9 million)
The payments from FIFA are a welcome boost for clubs, who often lose out on revenue when their players are called up to the national team. The money can be used to help offset the costs of training and development, and it can also be used to improve the club's facilities.
